Analysis of DR. SIGMUND FREUD DISCOVERS THE SEA SHELL Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982)


Chapter I
Introduction:
               I analyzed this poem named DR. SIGMUND FREUD DISCOVERS THE SEA SHELL
From Archibald MacLeish (1892-1982) because poetry is very interesting. Why? Because many use figurative language such as personification and similes. So it makes this poem has the implied meaning or implicit meaning rather than the explicit meaning. I analyzed this poem using my understanding of the basics of writing poetry and theory of freedom to interpret it means the author of this poem is dead. So, I can analyze this poem according to my understanding of poetry.

Chapter II
Analysis
Name of Stanza
What is stanza in poetry? Stanza is similar to paragraphs in prose. Both stanzas and paragraphs include connected thoughts and are set off by a space. This poem consists of seven stanzas are divided into 4 Quatrain, 2 Tercet, and the remaining one line that stands alone into one stanza.
Rhyme Pattern
What is rhyme pattern? A rhyme or rhyme pattern is a repetition of similar sounding words occurring at the end of lines in poems or songs. The rhyme pattern of this poem is ABCA ABCA ABCA ABC ABC A ABBC

Subject Matter
What is subject matter? Subject matter is the general or specific topic of the poem (what the poem is about). Subject matter of this poetry is Human Belief. Because this poetry talks about human belief, human believe science or human believe his religion. Both of them is antipathetic power that human believe.
Theme
Theme is an element of a story that binds together various other essential elements and gives readers’ better understanding of the meaning of the poetry. Theme of this poetry is about 2 power that antipathetic but sometimes human race believe both of them. Science and religion as metaphysic power are different power that lead human to believe itself and they have different effect so to us as human. Especially our knowledge about our life situation.
Meaning
What is meaning in poetry? Meaning is a message to reader of the poetry to figure out the purpose of the poetry. Meaning can mention what the feeling that poem wanted to tell. Meaning of this poetry is science and religion have their own power to make difference situation in our life, because we as human may believe one of them or both of them.
Speaker
What is speaker in the poetry? Speaker is the person which is reader is supposed to imagine
who is talking in the poetry. The speaker of this poetry is he or the man. He means reflection of the human.
Audience
An audience is a literary term used to describe for whom a writer is constructing a poem. The audience of this poetry is she. She means reflection of the the power of science.
Tone
What is tone in a poetry? Tone is the way how they readers read and how they should feel while they are reading it. The tone of this poetry is expressly because this poetry show us the firmness of the human about what they believe.  
Imagery
Imagery is a language which is used to create image or a picture about what is happening in the poem thoughts into all our senses and interpret visual images to create interest imagine scenes and character that is in poetry. This poetry uses visual imagery and audio sense this sense can be seen in the first line of the fourth stanza, "Staring at darkness. In her holy cell author uses imagery to explain the situation vision contained in poetry, audio sense be seen from the third line of the last stanza, Troubles forever with that asking sound?” Explains the author wants to create a situation becomes more dramatic by using auditory imagery so that the reader can captures the voice of the person who asked the curiosity of the problems it faces life between science and her religion.
Figurative Language
What is figurative language? Figurative language is language that uses words or expressions with a meaning that is different from the literal interpretation.  There are many different types of figurative language. I find the author of this poetry use two types of figurative language such as:
1. Personification – many lines of this poem is built using personification as in "She knows how every living thing was fathered" here the author assumes that every living creature can be a head or heart in this life, including science and religion is a matter which different but can be used response to the problem in this life but here the author does not use one of them to answer the questions contained in the poem.        

2. Metaphor- besides personification author also use a metaphor to make different things contained in the poem that science and religion is to have a resemblance but still be two different things, one example on the line "She never wakes at night in heaven or hell " here the author likens science and religion is like heaven and hell, two different but we all would have ever felt.


 Chapter III
Conclusion
From my analysis of this poetry I can conclude this poetry is very skillfully. Why I said that? Because this poetry is very implicit and use figurative language and imagery to make it more imaginative. Personification and metaphor are very dominant figurative language that author use to saying more with less word like Mrs Arie Swastinie said since she first taught me in the literature class.
