Chapter I
Introduction:
I analyzed this poem named DR. SIGMUND FREUD DISCOVERS THE SEA SHELL
From
Archibald
MacLeish (1892-1982) because
poetry is very interesting. Why? Because many use figurative language such as
personification and similes. So it makes this poem has the implied meaning or
implicit meaning rather than the explicit meaning. I analyzed this poem using
my understanding of the basics of writing poetry and theory of freedom to interpret it means the author
of this poem is dead. So, I can analyze this poem according to my understanding
of poetry.

figurative language such as:
1. Personification –
many lines of this poem is built using personification as in "She
knows how every living thing was fathered" here the author assumes
that every living creature can be a head or heart in this life, including
science and religion is a matter which different but can be used response to
the problem in this life but here the author does not use one of them to answer
the questions contained in the poem.
2. Metaphor-
besides personification author also use a metaphor to make different things contained
in the poem that science and religion is to have a resemblance but still be two
different things, one example on the line "She never wakes at night in heaven or
hell " here the author likens science and religion is like
heaven and hell, two different but we all would have ever felt.
Chapter III
Conclusion
From
my analysis of this poetry I can conclude this poetry is very skillfully. Why I
said that? Because this poetry is very implicit and use figurative language and
imagery to make it more imaginative. Personification and metaphor are very
dominant figurative language that author use to saying more with less word like
Mrs Arie Swastinie said since she first taught me in the literature class.
